PC hardware and software moves much too quickly to consider games as a 5-10 year commitment, while subscription gaming platforms offer a large and constantly growing catalogue of games at least they offer greater variety and value than either a massive investment in this game. There are too many other games worth playing.

They are experiences you play and enjoy for a fairly limited time (typically months at most), and then you move on. The lifetime licence works out much better with upgrade cycles of 5 years or more, as it has for you. But here's the thing: those are products that I anticipate needing and wanting to use perpetually or at least over fairly long periods. I even still buy albums, both in physical form and digital files in preference to streaming options. I buy the lifetime licence of things like Office and photo editing software. I'm normally very against subscription models. I might also know that I could get sick of it after a month or two (as I have previously), only wanting to come back to it infrequently, if at all. I might want to test expansions or farm achievements for example. Maybe I just want to play the game for a month or two and enjoy the 'full' experience without such a massive commitment. It is worth playing for a few months at about $10/month for me. Is this game worth 7 AAA games with all DLC? I don't think so. And that was the full experience: nothing left out! If you've bought every available DLC for this game (without discount) you've paid about $60 *PER YEAR*. The last AAA game I got for $60 and I played it more than I have Cities Skylines. I can buy 4-5 AAA games or 1-2 *DOZEN* indie games for that price. For new players it would cost $385.90, and that's before the latest DLC dump which will surely push it over $400! You have to be *really* into this game (and have a VERY capable PC) to consider paying that kind of money. To buy the remaining DLC I don't own costs $331.40. Even without radio stations and asset packs you're looking at > $200 Australian. I'm not committed enough to this game to pay the staggering amount it takes to buy all DLC.
